Glassy Day Studio gives new life to the waste material from the surfboard glassing process. Large chunks of resin, sourced from a local surfboard shaper, are cut into small blanks, which are then put on the lathe and turned into bangles, hoops, beads, and more. The material and way each design is handcrafted means no two pieces are ever the same. UWF Sumo Robot team will be attending the National Robotics Challenge (NRC) and participating in the Sumo Robot competition at the NRC. The Sumo Robot Contest requires a student team to build a self-propelled, autonomous, sensing robot, designed to force another Sumo Robot outside a ring. The competition ring will be a square painted flat black, measuring 8’ across. When any part of the robot crosses completely over the white outer ring while being pushed by the opposing robot, it will lose the match. All Sumo Robot matches will be best of three.

UWF Sevil Research Group in the Department of Intelligent Systems & Robotics focuses on navigation, guidance, and control of mobile robots, as well as using computer vision methods to detect-identify-track objects with mobile robots. We will demonstrate a hexapod robot, which is used to detect and follow drones, and a quadruped robot, which essentially maps out its surroundings, then finds the quickest and most efficient route to the goal position without running into any obstacles.

The NASA Human Exploration Rover Challenge (HERC) is a competition where teams from across the globe design, document, and fabricate a human-powered vehicle to traverse obstacles that replicate terrain on Mars. The competition is hosted in Huntsville, AL, and allows students to get hands-on with NASA Engineers! The UWF Spring 2024 NASA Rover team designed and constructed a Rover for the 2024 competition in a single semester. This year will be different as we are designing and fabricating throughout the fall semester to give proper testing time before the NASA Rover competition in April 2025.
